Eagles’ head coach Chip Kelly said that the Week 1 starter will be Michael Vick. This was expected for the most part, as Vick had been the better quarterback through training camp and the preseason thus far. It also help that Vick is the most experienced quarterback on the roster for Philadelphia.
Vick will start in Week 3 of the preseason against the Jaguars, likely to play the majority of the first half and potentially on into the second.
On the other sideline for Jacksonville, Blaine Gabbert was named the starter. It was a competition between Gabbert and Chad Henne. Gabbert went down with an injury last season and Henne stepped in. This opened the door for the competition, with Gabbert winning out.
Despite the fact that both Vick and Gabbert are now the starters, there will be plenty of heat on their backs throughout the season which will certainly still make room for potential controversies and more competition later on down the line if either struggles.
Though with the unknown laid to rest, it will be interesting to see how each of them settle into their role knowing that they are the starters. Whether or not there is a level of comfort with Vick or Gabbert could be a point to watch in this game.
