Notre Dame will get the opportunity to get back some top-25 votes if they are able to take down Arizona State this weekend. The Fighting Irish lost at home 35-21 to the Oklahoma Sooners this past weekend to fall to 3-2 on the season. Notre Dame has lost to both ranked teams they’ve faced so far this season, with the Sun Devils the last ranked opponent on the schedule until the final game of the season against Stanford.
For the Fighting Irish to win this one, it will have to start on offense. This is a team that ranks 93rd in the country running the ball, and 56th passing. So they don’t do too much well. What’s a ironic though is that Notre Dame racked up 220 rushing yards against Oklahoma this past week, but it did nothing to open up the passing game, as the Irish were limited to just 104 yards in the air.
Arizona State has been susceptible to big plays though, as was demonstrated in the loss to Stanford a few weeks ago.
The Sun Devils meanwhile can sling the ball around. They rank 7th in the country in passing, putting up close to 360 yards on the air. Arizona State hung 62 points on USC and was the tipping point to Lane Kiffin getting fired.
This is a big game for the Sun Devils, who will have a manageable schedule coming up on the schedule over the rest of the season, with ranked opponents Washington and UCLA still to go. But this is a team that can certainly represent the Pac 12 South in the conference championship game.
