Florida State enters this one as the biggest favorite ever over a top-10 team. That might say more about what Miami is than what the Seminoles are though. Certainly Florida State has proved to be one of the top teams in the country, separating itself along with Alabama and Oregon. But Miami as the seventh-ranked team in the country has been more by a virtue of losses by teams in front than impressive wins by them.
This includes comeback wins over Wake Forest at home last week, and woeful North Carolina the week before on Thursday night. Miami Scored the winning touchdown with under a minute to play.
Contrast that with the style in which the Noles are dominating opponents (ask Clemson), and it’s easy to see why this betting line is set at 22 points.
If anything though, the Hurricanes will be playing with a chip on their shoulder. All week long they will be hearing about Jameis Winston and how good this Florida State team is. At the same time they will be hearing about how they are overrated and that their close wins prove that they don’t belong in the top-10 of the BCS rankings.
This will all be decided on the field in Tallahassee Saturday night. With rivalry games as big as this one you never know what can happen. Many of these players played high school football on the same team or against one another, so the rivalry goes back even further than college.
Regardless of the outcome, it’s good to see this rivalry back atop where it belongs. This is the first time since 2004 that both are ranked in the top-10 come kickoff.
